John and Debbie Rush
The Story
John Rush, owner of Papa Rush’s Used Books, named his store after a title close to his heart. Growing up, John called his own grandfather “PaPa”—pronounced like the paw of a dog or cat—and all eight of John and Debbie’s children used the same name for John’s dad.
Over the last two years, John himself stepped into that role, becoming “PaPa” to two beautiful grandchildren. With roots in the mountains of West Virginia and Debbie’s deep connection to the Hilltop, their bookstore is a blend of heritage, hospitality, and heart.
There’s still nothing like holding an old, used book in your hands
An avid reader, John delights in conversations about what people are reading and learning. In an age of fast-paced technology and instant answers, he believes there’s still nothing that can replace the feel of an old used book in your hands, or the joy of getting lost in its wonder and delight.
His store is a place of simple pleasures—a treasure hunt of creaky shelves, well-worn pages, and unexpected finds waiting for the next curious reader.
Papa Rush’s Used Books is more than a store—it’s part of a growing, connected community.
Alongside Third Way Coffeehouse, Kutt Records, March Hardware (a boutique art supply store), Best Side Design, Clay Street Ceramics, and Diverse’s Poetry, John is helping to build a “third space” at the Broad and Westmoor corridor in The Hilltop.

Papa Rush’s Used Books shares their space with diVERSES Poetry. Here are regular weekly events a diVERSES Poetry:
- Mondays 6:30PM – Poet Business Institute, workshops centered on poetry craft and creative business
- Tuesdays 11:40AM – Arts & Authors Video Podcast recording
- Fridays: 12:30PM – author headshots
diVERSES has a few other events at other locations throughout the city, and a couple times a month little workshops on weekends.
